What is 100% Cashmere?

Cashmere is a luxurious and highly sought after natural fiber that is known for its exceptional softness and warmth. This exquisite material is found in a variety of cashmere products, including sweaters, shawls, accessories, and more. But what exactly is cashmere made of? In this article, we will explore the origins of cashmere and the unique characteristics of its fibers. We will delve into the manufacturing process and discuss the sustainable practices within the cashmere industry, highlighting the importance of preserving the environment and supporting ethical production methods.

Cashmere: The Origins

Cashmere wool comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats, specifically the Capra aegagrus hircus breed, mainly found in the Indian subcontinent, specifically the area around the Himalayas in countries like India, Nepal, and Mongolia. These countries offer the ideal climate for these goats, and the goats grow their soft undercoat to protect themselves from the harsh winters in this region.

These goats have a double fleece, consisting of a downy undercoat and coarse guard hairs; it is the fine undercoat that is used to produce the coveted cashmere fiber. The origins of cashmere can be traced back thousands of years, and the wool later gained popularity in Europe during the 14th through 19th centuries.

However, not all cashmere is made equal. The specific Mongolian Cashmere used by LE CASHMERE is recognized for its higher value than cashmere produced in other regions. This is because Mongolian goats endure colder and longer winter days than other major regions such as China (Nemongol), India, and Nepal, so their inner hairs grow longer and thinner.

What is 100% Cashmere?

100% Cashmere products use only cashmere and no synthetic fibers of fiber mixing. These products provide excellent warmth while feeling light as a feather.

Cashmere is known to be three to eight times warmer than wool fiber. Since it is a natural fiber, the texture is very soft and provides a silhouette that drapes naturally. LE CASHMERE only uses 100% Mongolian cashmere of the highest grade.
